Period Basis “Who wants a dread kill, baby?!” – Vily [ETNY] |

In seeming response to our attacks on D2’s industry towers, or perhaps as part of an ongoing plan, the North organized a surprise assault on our capital shipyards in our home space. It should not have been able to happen the way it did. Our starbase setups were crap and we completely underestimated the size and power of the Northern capital ship fleet in the area. The first tower was below 50% shields by the time we got anyone online to adjust strontium levels. The first yard would come out during prime time two days later. It was empty. The second yard contained a Hel Mothership with 8 days left in build. To avoid the expected zerg rush from Goons, we set the second tower to come out right before downtime the following day. Only a few in MC even knew about the Hel in build. On the night of the first tower defense, MC pilots cloned home and our full complement of four Motherships prepared to lead the defense with nearly thirty MC and allied carriers. Outbreak showed up in force and Marko took charge of the layered support defense into the shipyard system. BoB set up multiple choke points in the corridors leading down to our space. LV formed a gang of nearly 100 pilots and made its way into Delve to link up with BoB as well. FIX, DFC and FATAL also came in sizeable numbers. As the counter on the tower ticked down, the blobs on the map swelled and reports of 50-70 enemy capital ships reached us. It seemed that our show of force was sufficient, and the attack never materialized. The blobs were attacked and broken up or dispersed of their own accord. The tower was repaired and we all breathed a sigh of relief. The next day, I sat down at my computer, ready to log in after downtime and help repair the tower with the Hel inside. As I logged into MSN Messenger nearly a dozen windows popped open. “AAA & RA have 26 dreads in system! They logged at the tower as DT hit!” Our strategy to avoid a Goon zerg rush had worked, but we’d totally forgotten about the Russians. I logged into TS in the middle of a flurry of discussion about how to save the shipyard which I cut through with all the subtlety I’m well known for: “Forget this defense crap. Twenty-six dreads? We’re not repairing the tower. The tower is dead. Accept it. We have only one goal – bleed them.” Downtime was over. Local in L5D swelled to over 100 in the first 60 seconds as both sides scrambled like mad to get gangs going and get in position. We had very few dreads in system; this would be all carriers and BS. Within five minutes the enemy dreads were in front of the tower and pounding away. The enemy dreads focused their fire on the tower exclusively and the first died to the BS and support gang led by Marko. As that first enemy capital exploded, our tower followed soon after. Our gang was now at over 80 and a swarm of support ships and interdictors descended upon the still-sieged dreads like locusts. Into this I warped my Nyx and nearly a dozen allied carriers. Another enemy dread exploded. Then another. Suddenly, Evil Thug appeared on the field about 150k off of the main battle that was rapidly turning into a Dread shooting gallery. Our support aligned and then warped as the doomsday from the AAA Erebus darkened local space. Most of our fleet got out okay and the carriers launched fresh waves of fighters or drones. However the DD had cleared the field long enough for most of the enemy dreads to cyno out. Two more didn’t make it out before our support warped back in and locked them in place, sealing their fate. TS was filled with cheers until I informed everyone what had been lost. The blow was made easier by exacting a toll on the attacking dreads but, more importantly, it set our forums on fire. The ‘job’ had become something more now. We’d known what the risks were going in, but now the rank and file MC member finally understood that there was only one way we could respond – we had return the damage inflicted upon us ten-fold and ensure such an attack could not take place again. |
